Conveyor Self Check-In Luggage System – Avianca Airlines Initiative
Avianca Airlines launched the Conveyor Self Check-In Luggage system as an innovative initiative to streamline passenger check-in at the airport.
At the time, the traditional check-in process was inefficient, often resulting in long lines at the counters. This system was designed to be a groundbreaking solution—not only the first of its kind at the airport but also a pioneering effort in the country, preceding similar initiatives by any other airline.
The goal was to provide passengers with a faster, more autonomous check-in experience by allowing them to drop off their luggage directly onto a conveyor belt system, reducing wait times and operational bottlenecks.
Unfortunately, the project was placed on hold and eventually abandoned due to heightened security concerns following the events of September 11. Despite multiple attempts to revive the initiative over the years, ongoing safety and regulatory challenges ultimately led to its permanent cancellation.
